FAQ

General Site Questions

What if an account is inactive, but I want to use the name for my character?
As long as the name doesn't belong to an active player (check the Player Database) and hasn't been logged into for over a year, you're welcome to request it get freed up! Simply post in Maintenance with your request. In the case of deceased characters, or inactive characters that belong to active players, you can always check if they're okay with renaming their character so you can use the name (i.e. renaming them from Bob to Bob I or Bob 1 is acceptable, with their permission).

One of my characters was set inactive. How do I get it accepted again?
All you have to do is post again in Approvals to get reaccepted.

Character Questions

Can a character join already being part of a pack?
The way our system is set up, every character has to be accepted into a pack via. an in-character thread, so no. The only exception to that rule would be if your character was born into a pack on site.

How does my character join a pack?
This all happens in-character. Feel free to have your character directly approach the borders (using the pack lands), or they can even be claimed or recruited from the Battlefield or The Boneyard if you desire.

How does my character leave a pack if the alpha isn't replying to my attempt?
If your character is attempting to leave a pack and an alpha is being uncooperative, your character may initiate a freedom challenge. This will force the alpha to reply, and if they do not within three days you may request a default as per usual fight rules.

Can wolves communicate with NPC animals? Birds? Companions?
We're extremely flexible in regards to this. Some people have characters who can talk to their companions while others don't - feel free to use creative freedom here.

What sort of items can be made in terms of crafting?
Crafting with a realistic wolf character is going to be an exercise in creativity. As long as it is something a real canine could do if they had human intelligence, it is allowed. As far as what the characters have access to, we again ask that members use their own creativity to come up with what might be found or made. There are many human-places on Ardent that do in fact specify that human relics can be found there, and since we allow human relics such as collars and jewelry to be used as accessories it is reasonable for members to assume that other items can be found throughout Ardent without needing to be specifically stated.

What are the rules regarding RPing with yourself?
There are no restrictions on RPing with yourself for plot purposes, though where skill claims are concerned we ask that you do it sparingly and do not abuse it. As well for alpha players, any posts written to only your own characters are not valid posts for alpha activity checks.

Can characters read and/or write?
Some characters are written as having the ability to read and write words, others decipher and scrawl runes, and some have no knowledge of any written language at all. This is up to your creativity and we do not police it.

How long does it take to travel across territories / continents?
We do not police travel times on-site nor have we given any distances across territories or continents. Some players like to think it would take a week to travel across Boreas, others assume being able to do so in days. We encourage each individual to do what feels realistic to them.

How big can my mutations be? (Antlers, quills, scale patches, feathers, etc)
Antler wise, a minor mutation pass would cover about the same size as a two or three point buck. Horns should be kept small, approximately to the proportional length of a pronghorn’s. Quills, feathers and scales are generally kept to small patches or clusters of the mutation, and can only cover one section of a character’s body. (the neck, along the back, etc.) The best way to be certain of if your mutation is of reasonable size is to bring a rough reference to staff to look at.

Does a mutation gained through an inheritance pass need to be the exact same mutation as their parent?
Somewhat. The mutation inherited must be the same mutation as the parent in question, but can appear on your puppy with variations in size, location and appearance so long as it does not too closely resemble a mutation of another type.

Can I request my character change their build?
Yes. As you roleplay your character, you can request staff to reflect the change in maintenance. This is done often as a result of declining or improving health, but please do not abuse it. These changes should be organic and realistic to your character.

Store/Item Questions

Can gems from inactive character accounts be used to make purchases?
Yes! As long as they're not being used on items that are specifically marked as account-only purchases (pack creation and pack challenges, specialty unlocks, etc).

Do I need to make a bunch of separate posts for every single item purchase I make?
The best thing to do is to separate everything.

Can you get refunds for items (and donation rewards) on characters you no longer want to play?
Yes! As long as they have 10 or fewer posts (if they exceed 10 posts ,you must seek staff approval first). All characters being refunded will be deleted, so save any profile information before you request refunds!

Can the new member bonus item worth 400 Gems or less be saved for a future character?
No. This can only be used on your first character on site.

If a player’s first character goes unused/deleted/refunded can they get their new member bonus gemstore item back?
Unfortunately the new player bonus is exclusive to a player’s first character on site, and whether the character is kept active or is posted with does not make the bonus gems refundable. This includes leaving for many years and returning, as you are still considered a returning member and not a new one.

Do “artificial” markings need a colored marking pass? (Paint, dye, etc.)
These types of markings do not need a colored marking pass and instead are purchased as a small accessory.

Do “odd color marking” passes cover gradients / shades of similar color / etc?
An odd-color marking pass generally covers things such as “unnatural red” or “unnatural blue” and so long as the shades/gradients are similar enough, one pass can cover multiple shades. If you are still unsure whether your design will need one or multiple passes, asking a staff member is the step.

Can I donate to the site in increments to save for a larger package?
Yes! Plenty of members donate in small increments (or donate small amounts on behalf of other members in a trade for art or items) and those increments can be freely merged together into one larger for a higher tier donation reward.

Other Species

Do other species characters adhere to the same lifespan as wolves/canine characters?
No, we have always allowed other species characters to live out their natural lifespans.

Do other-species characters have to be fall within the size limit for wolf characters?
No, but they need to fall within the size limits for that species in general.

Do other species need a rogue pup pass if brought in very young?
No, young of other-species do not require a rogue pup pass purchase.

Companions

Do companions adhere to the same appearance restrictions as wolf / canine characters do?
No, there are no restrictions on companion appearance as far as colorations or markings go.

I want to make a small / large companion, but the species is too large for the site limits; can I simply make it a "dwarf" of that species?
Unfortunately no, we require a reputable source showing a height range that your purchase falls within the limits of.

Fight System

Can one challenge to disband a pack or band?
No. You can disband a pack through a siege, but not through a pack challenge. If you claim a pack and then fall inactive, it will only be disbanded if it is not claimed within a week.

How do defaults affect award or skill claims?
Neither a win nor loss via a default can be used to claim any current award (including the ‘won//lost five fights in a row’ award), and the only skill claim that can include a default is the one written ‘won an official fight via default’.

Skills / Specialties

Do you need 3 rounds for every single skill claim?
Per the skill claim rules, you can use each batch of 3 round posts for 2 separate skill claims, but no more.

Can I help someone else do their seasonal skill claim if I have already done one for that season?
Yes! You may participate in as many player’s seasonal threads as you wish, the limit of one per character per season only references how many you can claim for skill points.

Can I claim awards / skills that have a completed thread from before the award / skill was added to the site?
Yes! The only restriction here is for skill threads completed before the skill system was added. You can only claim points for skill threads completed after your character was given that particular skill. (The date each character was given their skills can be found on their profile)

Can you claim the “get to know a pack mate” skill claim more than once?
No, this is a one-time claim per wolf.

In which situations can I claim (and not claim) the “met a wolf” intellect skill claim?
This skill claim is meant to be when you have met a wolf for the very first time. You can claim it even if you do not exchange names, so long as there was a meaningful interaction in said thread. You can not claim this for any wolf you have met on or off-site, OOCly assumed or ICly previously. This includes but is not limited to: freshly playable pups meeting their littermates or parents, wolves brought in off-site where they have been said to have grown up together, or pack members you are assumed to have met and interacted with but have not had a meaningful one-on-one thread with. For these situations, you are encouraged to instead use the “get to know a pack mate” skill claim.

Can you have two different specialties from the same skill?
No, your second specialty must be from a different mastered skill then your first specialty.

Can a character with a second specialty use both in the same fight and/or raid?
No, you must choose each fight which specialty you would like to have active. This includes passive skills like Bard or Combat Medic, if you would like the benefits of their effects you cannot also receive the benefits of your other specialty in the same fight or raid.
