Halloween 2020 - Witches Hut
10-09-2020, 11:13 PM (This post was last modified: 10-09-2020, 11:14 PM by Abilene.)
Abby found herself returning more and more to the apple trees beyond the pack lands. Like a slow tide, she found herself drawn to the strange calm in the perfectly placed trees surrounded by wild shrubbery. Like the plateau to the north it struck her as inherently unnatural, but instead of the uneasy stillness that surrounded the ancient monoliths and occasional skeleton, the Orchard felt infinitely more comforting. Like something left behind but made anew.

The hours she spent here had increased steadily as she walked and rested among the greenery in her free afternoons, her only refuge from the stress that came with change and the incessant bleating of sheep. She found herself resting under a pear tree, looking out over the fields and the range on the horizon. It all seemed so distant there.

Káti was delighted to have met Wyndelin. The pair of them had similar gentle mannerisms and a love of making things. Wydnelin would get a fire started in a clearing in the Orchard and they were settling down on a gorgeous summer morning. Káti pulled a bundle of yarrow out from a square of deer hide and set it down between his paws. He planned to get some tea going as well as work on creating a poultice mixture. The tea was wonderful for colds and although he wasn't sick he found a lighter tea was just fine to drink. Using his teeth, Káti started stripping off the leaves and placing them into piles. He worked until he had two small piles for his projects.

It was a gorgeous day. Wyndelin grinned as he set down his travois to get started making a fire. His first task was getting a fire ring made. Grabbing a piece of rawhide he trotted over to a nearby stone. Taking his paws he rolled the stone onto the hide then seized a corner and dragged the stone over to where they were going to build a fire. He repeated this process several times til he had a good ring going.

Next he grabbed a large flat stone but rather than dragging it over to the fire ring he set it aside to work his clay on so he could make a nice pot. Hearing movement but not seeing anyone he decided to call out. "Hello? Is someone there?"

Halloween 2020 - Witches Hut
10-10-2020, 05:01 PM (This post was last modified: 10-10-2020, 05:01 PM by Abilene.)
The mottled girl peered from the bushes at the noises and inquiry, very much prepared to be confronted by a crazy woman or violent drunk. Even though the two men seemed more preoccupied with whatever they were doing than a threat, Abby felt a pang of selfish possessiveness over the land on which they stood. This was her place (Even though it really wasn't), who were they to... Drag stones around?

Curiosity smothered her first feelings of hostility and she emerged from the bushes carefully, testing if her presence was required and/or wanted. "Hello." She replied, now in the open and clearly visible. "What on earth are you doing?"

Káti padded back over to his travois and pulled out two ceramic bowls. Taking one small pile of yarrow leaves he placed them into one of the ceramic bowls. He then took another pile and placed it in the other ceramic bowl. The second bowl was for the poultice so he'd need to make sure the leaves were bruised and mashed. Taking a part of a deer antler he started mashing the leaves until they were in a good pulp.

At that moment Wyndelin heard something and Káti set the antler down. Nerves started to bubble in his stomach until a young woman popped up out of the bushes. She didn't strike him as the warrior type so maybe she wasn't about to beat both of them senseless. "Oh, I'm just making some tea. Or, I will, as soon as Wyndelin gets the fire going."

Wyndelin watched as a young woman greeted them from the bushes. He was relieved it hadn't been a bear or something. He smiled and dipped his head in greeting as Káti spoke. "Yea, you're welcome to join us if you want. We're just making some stuff and enjoying the summer days while we have 'em."

Wyndelin trotted back over to his travois and pulled out a lump of clay that was wrapped in a rabbit hide. Taking one end of the skin in his teeth he pulled until the clay rolled out onto the flattened stone. Káti made a noise in his throat and Wyndelin realized he had yet to get the fire going. With a sigh he trotted back over to the fire ring where he started piling sticks. He sought to put the biggest ones at the bottom and slowly built them up from the fuel wood to the kindling before finally adding some dry leaves as tinder.

Intrigue drew her closer, and she sat by the ring of stones. It seemed to be an awful lot of trouble just for tea, but the craft was definitely interesting. She also was eager to find out how they would make fire. She knew it was possible, but she had never seen the process up close and this was certainly a good opportunity to regardless of the strange scenario.

Guard swiftly lowered, she decided now was a good time to burden the busy strangers further with incessant questions. "What kind of tea? And how are you going to make fire?

"I'm making a yarrow tea. It's really good for wolves dealing with respiratory infections. Not that I have one. If you make it a bit weaker it makes a nice drink." The more concentrated the tea the more of its herbal properties would be pulled into the water. Káti scooted the bowl forward. "I put the leaves in this bowl here and then I add water to it." He grabbed his water skin and carefully poured in a bout a pint of water. He then scooted it toward the fire. "Now I just need to heat this up til the water starts to get colored. Usually a few minutes after the water starts to boil."

For the poultice mixture Káti added just a touch of water and then scooted that bowl near the fire as well, seeking to heat it but not let it start boiling. He'd let Wyndelin explain the fire.

"For the fire I've piled up my sticks and added some dry leaves since they'll catch fire easier. If this works the fire will move to the small sticks, then the medium sized sticks and finally to the biggest one." Wyndelin dug about the hide stretched across his travois and pulled out a chunk of flint which he set on the fire ring. "I'm going to try and make a spark by striking this flint with a piece of metal I found in the Veteran's Plateau."

He then grabbed a piece of steel. He set one paw on the flint to hold it steady with his weight.
Then, with the steel in his teeth, he twisted his head sharply to the side so that the steel struck against the flint. He did this several times, pausing to adjust the steel in his teeth until at last the kindling caught a spark and slowly grew into a small flame. He set the steel down and grinned at the girl. "My name is Wyndelin by the way. What should I call you?"

While he chatted he started shaping the clay with his paws, seeking to get it into some sort of rough bowl shape. He didn't worry about his claws making marks on the clay. If anything it would give the bowl character.

Watching the two at work was almost mesmerising. She hadn't expected making tea requiring much knowledge, but of course it's hard to heat water with nothing to heat it with. She sat between the two, unsure which process was more interesting so she tried to pay attention to both, gaze shifting from one to another occasionally. She felt like a bit like a pup being introduced to such simple ideas for the first time. Maybe one day she'd learn their craft as well, though it seemed unlikely.

"You can call me Abby." She replied with a gentle smile. She watched as Wyndelin started molding the clay, letting her questions be answered by watching the process rather than interrupting.

"Nice to meet you, Abby! I'm Káti. I can put on some chamomile tea if you'd like. It's a nice sipping tea. I also have peppermint. " Káti drank chamomile tea fairly frequently to relax his nerves and in he colder months to warm up after a day out in the cold. Though, he hoped to settle down somewhere a bit warmer this go around. He'd had enough of battling five foot drifts of snow like they had in his homeland. He went to his travois and unrolled a rabbit hide with fresh, if wilted, chamomile and peppermint. He'd originally been planning to dry it but he just hadn't gotten around to it. No matter, it would still work for tea. He started plucking the flowers from the chamomile plant and the leaves from the peppermint plant. Even if Abby wasn't in the mood for tea he knew Wyndelin would take him up on his offer.

"Peppermint for me!" Wyndelin chimed in. He didn't really know all that much about plants and was pretty sure he'd accidentally poison himself the first time he tried to make tea. There was almost definitely some deadly poison that smelt just like peppermint and he'd certainly find it and make himself sick. "Have you travelled east of here? I'm wondering what kind of terrain we'll run into." While he chatted he pulled off little pieces of clay with his claws and started rolling them with his paw pad on the skin side of a rabbit hide to form little balls that would eventually become beads. He didn't really have a plan for the beads yet other than perhaps decoration for the outside of his den or gifts.

"Chamomile sounds nice." She answered, eyes drawn to the growing flame as it danced it's way around the pile of wood. She was still reeling by the sheer ingenuity of it all. Who thought that the weird bits and pieces strewn across the plateau could be used in this way? If she had opposable thumbs and a notepad, she'd be writing this all down furiously. She'd never been much of a true creative thinker, she liked following pre-established ideas and procedures, but the igniting of flame had sent sparks of inspiration shooting through her mind. They'd die out sooner then later, but the brief illusion of creative thought was enough for her right now.

"Haven't travelled too far east yet." She replied, thinking of a good way to summarise. "If you go follow the river, expect to find a lot of cold rocks." A simple description, but she didnt know much else about the mountainous region.

Abilene agreed that chamomile tea sounded nice. "Ok, great." He grabbed one of his ceramic bowls and scooted it toward her along with a couple of chamomile plants. "Would you like to learn to make your own? You'll want about an ounce of the petals, either fresh or dry its… hmm…" He moved over to his pile of chamomile flowers and carefully scooted some into the bowl until he had as much as he wanted. "About that much."

Káti scooted some of the peppermint leaves into the other bowl for Wyndelin. Not all teas were made from the same parts of the plants and each part had a different weight so it took some getting used to. Most of what he knew he'd been taught by his mentor.

Wyndelin continued to break off small bits of clay and roll them with his paws into large beads. Well, what would eventually become large beads. At the moment they were just small balls of clay but he'd poke a hole through them with a prairie chicken bone later.

He glanced up at the mention of the east being mostly desert. "Oh? That must make for some rough terrain to travel. I grew up in the west in Lirim. It was a rich and fertile place but much of the land around it was desert."

Wyndelin returned to his travois for a moment to pull out some strands of leather. He planned to braid them and thread a clay bead on once they'd dried. This was a prototype really. If he wanted the beads to last he'd have to fire them.

Kati offered a lesson in how to make her own tea, and Abby leaped on the opportunity to learn. "Sure!" She responded with renewed enthusiasm, and she moved the bowl closer to her chest, examining the leaves within thoughtfully.

Her ear flicked as Wyndelin mentioned a pack to the east. Lirim, he called it. "Sounds familiar." She commented passively. Lachlan had told her his pack was getting disbanded, but she didn't know if he was referring to Lirim. Maybe asking for confirmation wasn't the best idea, but she pursued an answer anyways. No harm in asking, right? "I heard there was a pack disbanding to the east." She stated gently, the question unspoken but clear in her tone.

She returned to the ceramic bowl nestled against her chest. "Do I crush them, or?" She looked to Kati for guidance.

Káti nodded as Abilene asked if they should crush the petals. "Yes, that will help some of the good properties get into the water. You can use your claws and paws but I have something I think works better. Just a minute." He got up and trotted back over to his travois, pulling out a deer fibula. He walked back over to Abi and set the deer bone down. "You can use bones or antlers to mash herbs more easily. The balled end of a leg bone works really well or…" He gestured to the antler he'd been using earlier. "You can use the flat end of an antler where it connects to an animals head." Of course, he'd chewed off some of the tines on his antler so he didn't keep accidentally poking himself in the face. Using the antler he mashed up both the flowers of the chamomile and also the leaves of the peppermint.

Wyndelin nodded sadly at the mention of the pack disbanding. It had been really terrible luck for him. He'd escaped his masters, wandered all over creation, arrived home to find his father was dead and several of his siblings missing and then the pack was disbanded. He couldn't help but feel lost. At least he had his brother Eurus. "Yes, a wolf named Recluse abducted the alpha's wife and held her for ransom for Lirim. Our alpha agreed and well…." He shrugged. There wasn't much he could do about it now.

Taking a pine needle he started sticking it through the beads to make a hole so that they could be threaded onto sinew. Though as he had some leather with him perhaps he should make the holes bigger. He pulled out his chicken bone and worked to make wider holes before moving back to the leather strands. He laid three of them close together and gently barked for Flikkr his magpie to join them. The bird stirred from his napping place amongst the hides in the travois and hopped over, eyeing the going on's for a moment before taking the leather cords and tying a knot at the top. "Thanks, Flikkr." The bird yawned and nodded before nestling near the fire.

“Thanks.” Abby observed the bone, forming her plan of attack (not a literal one of course), before picking it up. It took a moment to position it to her liking, her teeth clicking against the bone as she tossed it around in her mouth, before moving her head to the side and using the rounded end to crush the petals as advised.

She listened to Wyndelin and she attempted to give him a sympathetic look, but it was difficult to do so with her head tilted like so. She managed a polite nod.

She lifted her head to examine her handiwork clearer. The paste seemed thoroughly crushed, but she sought a professional opinion in case she was incorrect. “Is this ok?” She asked Káti, voice muffled by the deer bone.

Káti's ears flicked up as Wyndelin explained what had happened to his pack. It really was a shame. "Well, you're welcome to stay with me for the winter if you need, though I don't know yet where I'll be making camp." He was considering some of the forested eastern areas or some of the western plains. They were very different territories, each with their own benefits.

Káti leaned over to look at Abilene's work and nodded. "Yes, that looks good! Ok, now we need to add water to the bowls and scoot them next to the fire to heat up." Picking up the bowl he trotted over to a nearby stream and carefully scooped in some water so that he had about a pint. He returned and set the bowl down. "I have some lids somewhere. Just a moment." He started digging around in the hides on his travois. Nope, nope… maayyybe-nope. Ah, ha! He returned with a pair of ceramic lids. Setting one on top of his bowl he used his paws to carefully scoot it next to the fire.

"Now, we let it heat up. Maybe… ten minutes or so. You don't have to use a lid. That makes it easier to see when the tea is ready." He scooted the peppermint tea toward the fire without a lid. "Though for chamomile a lot of the goodness might evaporate out so that's the one herb I like to cover. It does make it a bit easier to move the bowl near the fire without worrying about spills."
