Critical Fail!Trick 2019

A full night had passed since the haustblot and it was now time for the promised market. The goods ranged from trinkets to custom pieces to alcohol and more. Each participating band member had his or her own setup beneath a willow tree and of course, Valkyrie had her slaves. They were sequestered in a small cave behind her and the entrance was barred with wood and sharp wire so that none could see in and none dared try to get out. She would bring them out a handful at a time for potential buyers to look at - but not touch - and then auction them off one at a time.

Inga stood guard at the cave’s entrance while Valkyrie walked through the market. She looked over each ‘stall’ and smirked knowingly at each merchant. They’d all been told to be on their best behavior unless things got dicey. While they didn’t necessarily need this market to offload their stolen goods at a later date, they did need the wolves of Boreas to think they did. With the threat of their valuables (or loved ones) being sold off to god knew where, the packs of Boreas would hopefully have the sense to agree to ransom when Hjarrandi came a’knocking.

With a howl Valkyrie announced the opening of the market and welcomed the curious to come take a look.

OOC: merchants! Please post once (at your convenience) so wolves know what you are selling. Each merchant is in charge of deciding what their ‘stall’ looks like and what their prices are. Feel free to make real trades with real items bought from the gemstone store or fake trades with npc items. Collect skill points, make friends, go on adventures, w/e. Your stall is what you make of it.

curious wolves! Post here to look at what’s for sale, talk to merchants and frown (quietly, preferably) at naughty, loved-one-stealing vikings, but please post actual transactions in separate threads to keep things simple.

captives! Don’t post here, please! Over the next couple of days I’ll make threads for each of you.

This character has a noticeable Icelandic accent!
Valkyrie also has a female melanistic japanese macaque named Inga. Unless she's mentioned IC it's safe to assume she's not with her master.
It can be assumed that Valkyrie has a bear skull mask hanging from a strap around her neck at all times.

07-30-2019, 03:55 PM (This post was last modified: 07-30-2019, 09:25 PM by Deathbelle.)
Eisleif sat back on her haunches, relaxed in front of her wares. There wasn’t much impressive, but she did have a large stack of raw prey animal furs. They’d been dried but not preserved, so they would need work before they were worthy of gracing a den, the hardened leather would be good for accessorizing or making armor though. She also displayed a few of her more crude weapons. A couple of spears she hadn’t been completely satisfied in, they were mostly decorative. Tied with bits of long or brightly colored fur. Eisleif didn’t have a companion to get too fancy, but she thought they looked nice.

She also had gathered the mock knives, little baubles, and whatever shinies she had been able to save up since hearing the news of the coming market. Mostly full of useful items Eis waited for trading partners, she had her eye on some finished or plush furs, food to preserve for the winter, and maybe something nice to get for Hymn as a potential wedding gift.

ooc: Just giving a vague idea of what Eisleif has so we can work in specifics for whatever your wolf happens to need specifically when it comes to furs, crude weapons, or tiny trinkets.

Offering:
10/10 crude pelts
2/2 weapons
2/2 decorative spears
3/3 trinkets

Wanting:
0/3 finished leather furs, preferably fluffy
0/3 promise of winter food
0/1 special item for her boo

News of the market, and a hint at what might be expected from its wares, had drawn Sirius from his duties in the pack. With a heads up to his Empress, he would make his way to the South in search of this rumoured event. He wished to know what he might bring back to the Ashen Empire, and to learn what was happening in the world outside their borders.

He entered the market, and his nose was assaulted with the scents of food, and alcohol, and misery. The last reminded him most keenly of the slave pens in the Ashen Empire, and he followed his nose until he found them. His first thought was this was a prize he might bring home, and his second was Zee, who’s friendship he had almost lost in doing so.

He considered it for a moment, and thought that.. Well.. perhaps Ashen might be a better home then what they would otherwise find out in the world. If he was doing the slave a favour, perhaps Zee wouldn’t bite at him so. He stopped by the slave pen, gave a nod to its attendant, and waited to see what specimens she might bring forth for him to inspect. He would also have to find out what she desired in payment for a slave.

As the taskmaster it was expected that Rosemary would join the event and procure new slaves for the empire, he carried with him the wares from his latest crafting venture, gold chains, precious gems and tanned hides, his saunter careful and graceful as he approached Sirius. He disliked the male if for no other reason than daring to beat him in a fight, but kept his contempt to himself as he inspected the pen.

“Interested in buying something for Zeitgeist?” He purred at the large male, his white tail swishing behind him like a fish through water. He had kept close track of their one slave’s movements and knew she had taken a liking to Sirius. That was good in his opinion, if they had pups they would surely be large and may even inherit the male’s mutation without having to sully their Klein bloodlines with the by get of a slave.

He simpered and moved on, moving like a serpent to inspect the stall put up by the grey female, his ears flicking with interest. It was fine work, even he had to commend her, he walked by, feigning sudden disinterest to sniff at the alcohol that was provided at the event.

dark mists are cloaking what the eyes can see

Éldi hauled his wares to the location of the market and began to set up his items, unfurling elk hides and placing out various pelts and items he had crafted. He was running a bit late do to a little more drink than was wise the night before. Kaler followed behind with a smaller deer hide bundle while Askr perched at the opening of Éldi's stall. Working together they soon had his items set up. He wished he had had more time to craft some weapons and armor to sell but it wasn't meant to be for this market day. Maybe for the next he'd be better prepared. For now though he just sat back to take in the spectacle and perhaps meet a few new wolves. It would be good to get familiar with the needs and wants of the rest of the packs.

Tyranis had never been to a market, he arrived dressed in his armor, with his knife in his jaws, interested to see what he could barter for the pig skull or the sharpened femur, but far too attached to the fine white bear cloak that made up most of his armor. He’d heard that slaves were being offered at the market and that brought back memories of Erövrare. He had tried to make slavery a possibility within the pack but had found he was far too soft for it. He had appointed Hannibal to capture slaves to fill his ranks but the man had instead enlisted his own people, ultimately causing his paranoia to fester until he was suitably insane.

He shook his head to himself to shake the memories away and instead perused the stalls, looking with interest at the crafting materials being offered, as well as sniffing curiously at the wine. Tyranis had no experiences with alcohol, he’d been too guarded all his life to allow the substance to lower his defences, but there would be a ceremony in Winterfell soon to see him knighted, and he wondered momentarily how much debauchery the white alpha would allow under his borders.

Deity

Deity wandered from stall to stall, eyeing the goods laid out before her. There were beautiful trinkets of all sizes and colors and shapes, there were spears, there were furs, there was headwear and jewelry. Each stall had a different wolf sitting in it, guarding their goods. A flash of red caught Deity’s eye. She turned her head and saw a bright fox pelt alongside an assortment of feathers. Her gaze drifted across the wares splayed out across tanned elk hides. Then, from a distance, she observed the owner of the stall. Lifting her head slightly, she tried to catch a scent, but the marketplace was rank with colliding stenches of stars knew what. She couldn’t have sorted through the mess if her life depended on it.
So, for a moment, Deity watched the wolf. His frame was sturdy. Masculine— a male, then. Two companions perched by him, intently watching the crowd. This could prove to be interesting. Deity had nothing to trade, but she was curious as to how this market worked, and keen on learning about the ones who ran it.
Deity approached the stall, eyes fixed on the male running it rather than the goods. She stopped at the outer corner of the hide display to the male’s left. She cast her gaze downward, and lifted a paw to indicate the headdress. ”How did you make this?” She asked, regarding the object with fascination.

Market day had finally arrived, and in the time between this and the festival, he and his companions had returned to Winterfell to gather up the goods he was willing to trade. He had also informed those in the pack who hadn't heard of the Market about it, and were welcome to come along to trade as well. Ace had several items he was willing to part with, mostly things he had crafted himself, and they by no means had been easy to craft and some of the materials had not been easy to obtain, either. He wore his tiger skin armor to show his crafting ability, wanting to earn Winterfell a reputation for their crafting skills. As far as he was aware, he, Ignis, Tyranis, and a couple others were skilled crafters so far. He hoped that after today, they'd be recognized as such.

Glancing over his shoulder, Ignis pulled up with a small sled full of trade-able goods. Furs, tanned hides, feathers, trinkets for jewelry, weapons and armor he had crafted himself, food, and an array of other items. He had wanted to come prepared, and perhaps when he thought about it, he was a little too prepared. Oh well, more things to trade for. Besides, some of the items weren't all his. Ignis and Cloudburst had thrown in some of their stuff as well so they wouldn't have to make several trips to bring what they wanted here.

He glanced around, wondering if the stalls for the slaves he heard about were here as well or they would be presented later...he didn't have much of an interest in accumulating slaves since Winterfell didn't condone such things, but...he was curious nonetheless. Perhaps there would be the chance to free them...even if he didn't know them, nobody deserved to be a slave. And although he despised the idea, he wasn't going to start trouble with the band. He kept an eye and ear out for that while he wandered along the stalls to check things out. As he passed one, a few items caught his eye. He walked over to the merchants (Eldi's) stall and peered at his wares. "What would you want for the elk hide and feathers? Got any eagle or owl feathers in there?"

dark mists are cloaking what the eyes can see

Éldi watched the passers by going to and fro. He smiled politely as a lovely auburn woman approached his stall to inspect the turkey feather headdress. It had been a challenge for sure. Kaler had dared him to construct something and he had decided to try. If not for the dare the piece might not exist. Others might fear sharing how something was made but he didn't mind. Explaining and doing were two different things for one and for another more competition would just push him to be more creative in the future. "The headband part is a strip of tanned dear hide. The feathers are attacked to the hide on either side with resin. It's very sticky and holds wonderfully and best of all it is solid when it dries." He'd tried early on with different kinds of saps and some remained sticky far longer than he'd wished. He'd torn out a good chunk of his fur when an earlier prototype stuck to him.

"Once the feathers were dried Askr, my raven, finished sewing the two ends together with sinew to make the head dress. Is it a piece you're interested in trading for?"

Another wolf passed by, a large white male, who stopped in to gaze at his wares. Éldi smiled, pleased with the attention his items were getting. It seemed his hard work was paying off. "Greetings sir. I have some owl feathers but no eagle feathers I'm afraid." He made a mental note to try for an eagle some time. "I'm look for a buffalo hide, tanned leather and various pieces of metal, namely those that can be fashioned into weaponry but I'm open to other offers. What do you have that you could trade?"

The woman listened intently to the scruffy male’s words. The fashioning of the headdress sounded long and arduous, with an immense amount of trial and error. But the end result seemed to be worth it: the thing really was exquisite. She glanced over the other items, amazed at what these Hjarrandi wolves could do.
The male finished talking, and questioned her interest. She looked up in surprise and embarrassment: she had nothing but the fur on her back and the hoops in her ear. She hadn’t meant to lead him into thinking she was able to purchase it. “I— no, I’m sorry, I have nothing to trade. I was just curious,” she stuttered. Internally, she kicked herself: what was she doing, stuttering and embarrassed, in a place like this? She absolutely wasn’t projecting an air that commanded respect. Sure, she didn’t get out much, but that was precisely the reason she had to at least seem strong. Like a force to be reckoned with.
The goddess’s eyes traveled over the male’s wares again, no less full of awe than the first couple times she’d scanned them. She’d love to get her hands on some of these trinkets, but how? Certainly she wouldn’t be able to fashion something worth trading before the end of the day. These things took too much time.

Alas the woman had nothing to trade so he shrugged lightly. "It's alright, I'm always happy to show off my wares!" He could tell by the stutter she felt embarrassed but he really didn't mind, just as long as she wasn't someone trying to get any of his items for free. He wasn't the sort to go throwing things to pretty girls in the hopes of favors and tricks. Éldi turned his attention back to the pale man to await what the other wanted to trade for his wares. Curious, Askr flew closer, perching on a ledge near Éldi's shoulders. Kaler had curled up in the back of the stall for a nap but that was fine for the viking did not expect needing the bobcats claws any time soon. Surely no one was going to be stupid enough to try and steal something at the market but then you never really knew.

The male seemed unbothered by her lingering and questioning, fortunately, but the moment she admitted she wasn’t here to trade, he cheerily told her that was fine and turned to the next customer. Deity felt a bit like she’d been cast out— it was alright though, he’d meant no harm. Plus, he had more important things to do.
A tiny smile graced Deity’s lips as she turned away. Thankfully the weather wasn’t so bad— dappled sunlight graced her fur, warming her body. She looked around at the other stalls, seeing a few neat baubles. The vendors all seemed busy though, so instead of approaching their stalls, Deity decided to move to the treeline, where it was less busy. She didn’t know any of the wolves there, and had nothing to trade, so she didn’t have much to do. Which is why she decided to do what she did best: watch and learn.
