Winterfell

"When the snows fall and the white winds blow, the lone wolf dies but the pack survives."
- House Stark

Loyalty. Honor. Integrity. Justice. Stoicism. Strength of will. Determination to persevere against all adversity. These are some of the values of the wolves of Winterfell. Living in the harsh climate of the North, Winterfell wolves are hardy individuals with little fear. Winterfell is a militaristic style pack with a structured hierarchy revolving around hard work, respect, loyalty, and the willingness to protect their own. Constant training to achieve one's inner strengths and learn their own weaknesses is key here, that way when one lacks strength, another will stand by him to cover their weakness. Those who choose not to follow the core values of the pack, refuse to work on themselves, or better themselves in general, will not do well here. Winterfell welcomes all alignments, but bear in mind that those with darker tendencies will face consequences, as will any wolf who betrays or harms their pack. We look out for one another, and protect each other. That being said, Winterfell is a priority over other packs and your duties here come first. Work hard, train hard, prove your worth, and you will always have a home behind these walls. If a wolf of Winterfell has been harmed in some way, the pack as a whole will seek out justice. Once a wolf of Winterfell, always a wolf of Winterfell.

Pack Ranks

TIER 1 - The Ultimate Authority
King - The king of Winterfell. His word is law. The King has the final say regarding the packs affairs and none may surpass his word save for the Queen in some situations.
Queen - The King's mate. She holds just as much power as the King and is to be respected and obeyed. The Queen has just as much say as the King in most situations and helps him run the pack as an equal. Her word may not be overruled except by that of the King.
Hand of the King - The Hand is chosen exclusively by the King.  The Hand is the King's closest adviser, appointed and authorized to make decisions on behalf of the King's name if he is unable to attend himself. The Hand of the King is the highest-ranking member of the Small Council and leads meetings of the council as a proxy for the king when the monarch is absent. Additionally, The Hand should have proficient knowledge as a fighter and tactician, as they are in charge of the packs fighting force and leads the pack along with the King in times of war. He/she has proven undying loyalty to the King and is among the most respected members of the pack.
TIER 2 - Advisors
Lord Commander (1) - The highest ranking warrior. A master of fighting and commander of the packs warriors. He/she leads the warriors into battle and is in charge of organizing the militia. This position is to be respected and obeyed. This wolf works alongside the Tier 1's and Tier 2's to oversee the pack and ensure everyone has the knowledge to fight whether it be offensive or defensive. Masters of their skill, they provide war council and battle intelligence to the higher ups, and they sit in the Small Council. Their input and knowledge is highly valued.
Grand Maester (1) - The packs master healer and advisor. The Grand Maester is an important position in the pack. He/She is a learned wolf wise in history, medicine, and just about everything else. Their advice is highly sought after and carefully considered. They not only provide counsel to the King and Queen, but to the pack as a whole. The Grand Maester sits on the King's Small Council, which oversees the day-to-day operations of the pack. The Grand Maester is also in charge of the pack's healers and should have proficient knowledge in the healing arts, as well as high intellectual capabilities. More often than not when the King's Hand is Unavailable, the King & Queen may seek advice from the Grand Maester.
King's Justice (1) - The packs chief legal advisor, who also manages any prisoners the pack might have acquired, and supervises law enforcement. They ensure that the rules are being followed, and lead trials in the event the laws are broken. He/She is someone who has shown that they have a level head on their shoulders and should be unbiased during trials. Additionally, This position is in charge of staging trials, and handling punishments. When a wolf is put on trial, The King's Justice will determine whether or not the offender is innocent or guilty of whatever law(s) they have broken. They are also in charge of determining punishment (if necessary), and are often the ones to carry out that punishment. Their ruling may not be overturned except by the King and Queen. The King's Justice sits in the Small council as well and is to be respected.
TIER 3 - The Small Council
Emissary (2) - This position is strictly reserved for those who excel with diplomatic affairs. They are sent out to handle the pack's affairs concerning others either with the Hand of the King, or solo should the Tier 1's be unavailable. These wolves have proven beyond trustworthy with pack secrets, messages, and other confidential and sensitive information. Winterfell's Emissary's are generally level headed, and they are trusted with their decisions. The Emissary may attempt to create alliances, but the alliance cannot be finalized until the Council is informed before the final decision is made.
Master of Whisperers (2) - "The Master of Whisperers must be sly and obsequious and without scruple." The Master of Whisperers is the adviser in matters of intelligence and espionage for the pack and holds a seat on the small council while also supervising covert activities and information gathering, both at home and abroad. They are in charge of lower-ranking spies, trackers, and messengers within the kingdom, sending them out to gather information, send messages, and keep an eye and ear on the goings-on in the world. They are careful with their work and must be capable of being discreet to the best of their ability when interacting with outsiders and around other packs.
Master of War (2) - Fighters who have proven they are the best of the best. They know their way around the battlefield and are well versed and experienced in their field. They ensure the pack's defenses are stable as well as ensure proper training of the warrior ranks. These wolves sit in the Small Council and advise on matters concerning things like sieges, war, and raids. They have a keen eye for determining potential targets (for raids) and generally should have the ability to scope out opponent weaknesses. They organize border patrols, apprentice & mentor pairings, and anything else that has to do with the fighting field.
Master of Coin (2) - The Masters of Coin are the elite traders of the pack. They arrange trade agreements with other packs (and possibly rogues & bands). They are responsible for overseeing the packs resources and determine what the pack needs and handle it accordingly. Additionally, these wolves are tasked with training and teaching the packs crafters and blacksmiths as well as arranging expeditions to find needed materials. This position works closely with the pack's hunters, crafters, and blacksmiths so that they always know what's in stock and what is needed. The Master of Coin must inform the Tier 1's of potential trade agreements before they are finalized.
Master of Laws (2) - These wolves work beneath the King's Justice and are in charge of guarding prisoners and ensuring the laws are being followed. They value order within the pack and report suspicious activity to the higher-ups. They have a position on the small council as advisers and they may suggest new laws and customs, reforming of current laws already in place, or reporting about the prisoner's in Winterfell's possession (if any). They do not deal with punishment to unruly captives unless ordered to by the King's Justice, the other tier 1's, or the King himself.
Lord Commander of the Kingsguard (1) - Although this rank is a lower tier than the Lord Commander, this wolf works closely with the tier 1 Lord Commander, however, their positions are slightly different. The Lord Commander of the Kingsguard oversees those in the Kings Guard positions, and ensure the borders are secured and protected at all times. They see the defensive training of the pack's fighting guards and ensure everyone is getting adequate training. The Lord Commander of the Kingsguard fights alongside the pack's defenders in the event of a siege or raid, or serve as a second line of attack should Winterfell be the attacking party.
Lord of Iron (∞) - Master blacksmiths & crafters of the pack. They are Winterfell's best forgers and have made phenomenal creations such as weapons, armor, jewelry, etc. As well as things that benefit the pack, such as fortification of the borders, dens, and things that make life in Winterfell a little easier. These wolves are highly skilled and sought after for their handiwork, and each master crafter has a trademark emblem that is emblazoned into their work so their masterpieces are forever recognized as one of their own.
Archmaester (∞) - Healers and advisors of advanced skill levels. Not quite a master of their chosen field but are still recognized as an integral part of the pack. They treat the wounded with the best care possible and are there to aid those who end up wounded in battle either on the field or after depending on the situation/severity of the wound. Many come to the archmaesters for personal advice, and they are to give unbiased advice and help to those who need it. They are in charge of training Maesters and Squires interested in herbology so that they can better their skills.
TIER 4
Heir (1) - The heir to the throne should something happen to the king. May or may not be the king’s offspring, preferably someone that the king deems fit to lead in the future. Shows great promise and has learned the ways of the pack. The heir holds no special privileges and is expected to work just as hard as anyone else in the pack. They are expected to learn various fields and are trained by both Tier 1 & Tier 2 wolves.
Knight (∞) - Warriors who have excelled in the fighting arts. These are some of the pack's best warriors and their prowess in battle has been proven tenfold. Once a member becomes a Knight, they are to be respected as a top tier fighter and referred to as "Ser" once they have completed their knighting ceremony. Knights are essential to the pack. They protect and defend those unable to themselves, and are the packs main fighting force. They may give orders to those in lower tiers, call training of their choice, and at their whim (can be something other than fight training) as well as ensure all Squires and pages who choose the knights path are properly trained. Knights are honor-bound and have a certain code they must follow.
Maester (∞) - Intermediate level rank for wolves interested in healing and/or diplomacy. They have knowledge of healing wounds and illnesses, as well herbology. They ensure the members of the pack are healthy and looked after. Those interested in the diplomatic side of things also help to ensure the basic necessities of the pack are met and should accompany others on border patrols. They have a wide range of basic duties and when ready, may be promoted to Envoy (for diplomatic rank) or Archmaester (for healing rank).
Strider (∞) - Wolves who excel in both hunting and fighting. They are hunters who have proven capable of tracking and bringing down larger game. Despite every wolf being capable of hunting for themselves, Striders still play an important role in the pack. They are the ones tasked with tracking down rare & hard-to-find animals in order to collect certain materials for crafting and are also the ones called upon to take out more dangerous game & predators. Unlike Courser's, Striders can take messages to other packs or whoever a message needs to go to on their own since they are (should be) capable of defending themselves or making a quick escape should things go awry.
Blacksmith (∞) - Crafters, tinkerers, inventors...whatever you wish to call it, your skills are invaluable. Wolves with an infinity for making and building things use the world as their oyster to make anything they (or their packmates) dream up. Or try to, anyway. This level of blacksmith may not be as skilled as the Lord of Iron tier, however, they are always learning and perfecting their craftsmanship. Blacksmiths are in charge of fortifying Winterfell's defenses and coming up with new and inventive ways to better the pack's way of life.
Envoy (∞) - Diplomats in training. They are paired with an emissary if one is available, or a Tier 1 to learn what it takes to be an emissary (or an alpha if they desire that path in the future). They are expected to stick close to their mentor, especially when others come to the borders seeking trade agreements (or other matters of importance), as well as accompanying them on trips to other packs.
Kingsguard (∞) - Usually for the bulkier framed wolves of the pack, Kingsguards are the wolves who are specially trained in defensive fighting not only to protect the pack during raids but are on the frontlines with the king and higher-tiered members. As their name suggests, they defend the king and his heirs (unless otherwise told), but most importantly, the pack's honor and its members.
Paladin (∞) - Members who have shown interests in both fighting and healing. Wolves in this rank are expected to help their comrades in battle and learn both defensive and offensive fighting styles. Paladins are valuable assets to any packs arsenal but to Winterfell especially as they are considered special considering their skillsets.
Courser (∞) - Hunters, navigators, and trackers who have excelled in their skill. They ensure the pack's food stores are full (if the season allows), track herd movements, and aid other pack members with tracking down and locating needed materials. Coursers at times may travel with the diplomats when going out to other packs, especially when passing through difficult terrain. They are expected to know the layout of the lands beyond Winterfell and lead expeditions when requested.
Night's Watch** (∞) - Super secret spy positions that work directly under the King himself. This rank is unknown to the rest of the pack and is only attainable via an approach from the King. These wolves are highly trusted and loyal to the crest, so consider yourself special if you're in this rank. Only wolves who the King believes are superior in certain and needed skills (depending on the job) may be considered for this rank.
TIER 5
Squire (∞) - Usually for members 1 to 2 years of age are placed here to continue their training. Assigned a permanent mentor to train with and are expected to help with pack duties. Expected to shadow their mentor for training purposes (such as for border patrols, hunting/tracking, looking for herbs, etc.)
Elder (∞) - The Elder rank is a rank of retirement for wolves who have reached eight-ten years of age (usually depending on how capable or not the older member feels). They are not expected to do the same duties as other pack members, though teaching the younger generation and telling stories is highly appreciated. They may still help with duties around the pack if they so choose, however.
Ranger (∞) - Beginner level hunting rank. Wolves learning how to hunt and track prey animals are placed here. They are responsible for keeping the pack's food cache as full as possible.
Crafter (∞) - Beginner level crafting rank for members interested in the black smith field. The beginner role may craft small trinkets and jewelry, paint/dye fur, and aid in armor and weapon design.
TIER 6
Page (∞) - Young wolves in training (6mos).
Commoner (∞) - Wolves who have joined but not decided on a field of interest. If a field of interest is not chosen within a season then the king will decide where to place them for the time being.
Pup (∞) - This rank is for pups less than 6mos. old.
TIER 7
Captive (∞) - Wolves taken from other packs or bands during raids or sieges, or loners who have caused some form of grief against Winterfell or its members. Captives can be taken for a number of reasons, such as disrespecting a member of Winterfell, trespassing, hostility, or whatever a member of the pack feels constitutes capture. Though their stay here won't be long, Captives are usually held here until returned to their previous pack/band, or released by the King.
Refugee (∞) - Wolves seeking refuge for no more than one season are permitted this rank. Once the season is up then they must leave or join the pack.
Debtor (∞) - Wolves who owe the pack or a single member in some form. Must work off their debt by helping the pack and are required to reside within the pack until the debt is paid off. If a debtor refuses to contribute or work off their debt, then consequences may ensue. Anyone who fails to contribute in some form will find themselves here, (the only exceptions are elders & pups under 6 months old), nobody else is exempt!

Pack Rules, Culture, & History

The Tier 1's are the ultimate authority - The king's word is law. Failure to obey may result in consequences. While the king is a fair man, he will not tolerate treason or those that go against the law without good reason. While he understands that sometimes the law must be broken, it better be for a damn good cause. Those who break the rules will be put on trial to plead their case. The same applies to the Queen and the Hand of the King as well. Respect their decisions and obey their orders.

Respect your family - Respect your pack and your packmates. Remember, respect is earned within the pack and is not to be expected right away. Earning respect from the king and your peers is easy, however, with good deeds within the pack and the willingness to work hard and contribute. Disrespectful members will be promptly dealt with.

There is no slavery here - There is no such thing as slaves within Winterfell, however, prisoners can be taken with valid reason. The king ought to be informed of the reasons why a pack member wishes to take someone prisoner beforehand, if possible. If unable to inform the King or Queen beforehand, then they must be informed upon returning to the borders. If the reason is found to be invalid then the imprisoned wolf will be freed.

Concerning pups - -Pups born to Winterfell, remain in Winterfell. Whether by a loner or elsewhere, the pups are to be raised in the pack until old enough to make their own decision on whether or not they wish to stay or go. In the event the parent(s) wish to leave before the pups are of age, they may state their case to the King & Queen, or challenge for the right to leave with their pups. If stating their case, the decision of the Tier 1's will be dependent on certain factors.

Learn how to survive - Don’t be helpless. Living in the North is not easy. There may be times where you'll find yourself stranded in a blizzard or other dire predicament. If you do not know the bare basics of hunting, healing, and fighting you must agree to learn, or leave. You will not survive here otherwise. The knowledge need only be rudimentary, but it is important nonetheless. No member of Winterfell should be left without the basic knowledge of these core survival skills.

Pull your weight - This is your home now. Everyone must pull their weight one way or another. If you haven't figured out your field of interest, that's fine. Simply help the pack in other ways, such as helping healers look for herbs, border patrols, looking after pups, training etc. Those who sit around and do nothing will be warned. Those who continue to do nothing after a first warning will be demoted, and after that is up to the King.

Don’t start it if you can’t finish it - Not everyone may get along, and those who have gotten on each others nerves may settle their disputes however they wish, but may only do so with Tier 2 fights. Simply inform a Tier 2 or higher member to oversee the fight. Keep in mind they will not be allowed to interfere in any way without good reason. Starting disputes with allied packs is forbidden in most cases (raids are exempt from this), but if it happens then you must let the king know so it can be resolved where possible.

Rank Challenges - To attain a higher rank requires hard work and effort in the necessary skills as well as within the pack. Promotions will not be given to those who do nothing, and the Alpha knows who does what around the pack. When you feel you are ready to challenge for a rank (and you don't want to wait), speak with a Tier 1 or Tier 2 and they will determine whether or not you are allowed to challenge. Keep in mind, if your activity is low within the pack, you will not be granted the position regardless of your winnings. Lack of effort and duty will result in demotions with or without warning. Challenges for all ranks up to Tier 2 are welcomed and encouraged (Hand of the King and Heir are exempt, unless otherwise stated by the King). However, should you win your fight but fail to uphold your duties later, you will be demoted back to your previous rank. The King may also choose to accept or deny your request to challenge, however, if the challenger has not been active beforehand. If more than one party is interested in a certain position, then a special tournament will be held.

What happens behind these walls, stays behind these walls - Loose lips sink ships. Do not spill confidential information nor the secrets of your brothers and sisters to outsiders. As a precaution and for safety, this includes naming those within our borders. Do not speak ill of the pack or drag down its name. If you feel the need to do so, then leave. Members may speak about the pack in an effort to recruit others into our ranks.

Love and Mates - Winterfell is of the old school variety. When it comes to mates, the King must be informed and oftentimes mates must be approved. If the potential mate is a loner, then he or she must join the pack. Taking a mate from another pack (outside of arranged marriage) is not allowed as this can lead to tensions or complications between packs. Either he/she joins Winterfell, or you leave the pack. In the event of a one night stand, that is your choice, however, if pups result from your actions, then the King must be informed. Failure to inform the King or Queen will result in consequences. Attempting to keep it a secret will be considered treason.

Leaving Winterfell & Debts- If a member wishes to leave the pack of their own accord, the King will usually allow it, however, dependent on certain factors. If he feels you are unprepared to go on your own, then leaving may be delayed until he feels you are ready. Another determining factor is activity in the pack. If you refused to contribute or help your fellow pack mates, then he may also deny you leaving, and the lack of contribution and use of resources will be considered as debt. The King has no qualms in demoting members who abuse this. Certain members are held to a higher standard and this includes anyone tier 2 and above, his children, and those who may know confidential pack information. Once you feel the debt is paid off, you may restate your case to leave. Alternatively, if a member does not want to pay off the debt, they may attempt to challenge for the right to leave.

Concerning trespassers- Trespassers are to be attacked on sight, no exceptions!!! Trespassers or those who show up at the borders and act with hostility are to be met with force. If met by a tier 3 or lower, then a tier 2 or higher must be called and they will attempt to force claim trespassers who refuse to leave the borders. Winterfell is not a pack of snowflakes, and will not tolerate such behavior from outsiders and those who choose to disrespect them. The only wolves who are exempt from this rule are the ones who have been granted permission from the King and Queen, and the pack will be informed of those who are allowed on pack territory. Allies or outsiders wishing to see the Alpha(s) must stop at the borders, else they risk being attacked. Winterfell's safety and privacy comes first and foremost, and outsiders who trespass may be seen as threats. Failure to stop at the borders will result in consequences regardless of who you are. But as mentioned before, only those with permission to cross the borders are allowed to do so. All others are subject to a variety of things. Don't do it.

Pack loyalty- Loyalty is important. The king expects the members of Winterfell to be loyal to their crest and to each other. Your family is here now, and although it's understandable that you might have family elsewhere outside the pack, your Northern brothers and sisters come first. Treason is a severe offense and will be dealt with accordingly.

No one is exempt- The rules apply to everyone in the pack, including the King's children, Heirs, and so forth. The King & Queen are exempt (though they aim to set the example) for they are the ones who create them. Rules may be changed at any time as they see fit, however.

Customs:

❅ — Knighting Ceremony
When pack members are promoted to Knights or warrior positions above that, a special Knighting ceremony will be held. The King calls the pack together to witness the event (though it's optional for those not getting Knighted, however attendance is encouraged to show support for your pack mates hard work), and afterwards a celebration is held with feast and drink. Once a wolf has been Knighted, they then gain the title of "Ser" whether they are Male or Female. (Ex. Ser Bob or Ser Marianne). They also keep their Knighthood for as long as they live, regardless of whether or not they are in Winterfell or ranked out of the Knight position. However...let it be known that if a Knighted wolf has committed treason and/or betrayed their pack in some form, their knighthood can be stripped from them by the current alpha of the pack where they were originally knighted.

❅ — Championship Tournament
The Championship Tournament is an invite-only event held once a year at the beginning of Spring! This is an event where all of Winterfell's warriors (and non-warriors should they want to participate) along with invitees duke it out for the title of Champion! This is a special title that the winner keeps until he/she is defeated in the following years tournament(s). There is no official rank for this, however. Simply a title that proves you were the best of the best and for bragging rights! Not only that, but the Champion will receive a special accessory to wear as a trophy to show off their winnings!
